英語の長文読解で苦労している子どもたちは多いです。でも英語の長文読解は1つ1つ階段を上っていけば、必ず得意になることです。今日はその1つ1つの階段について、お話させていただきます。
セクション1: 英単語の勉強から始めよう
英語の長文読解が苦手な子のすべては、英単語の知識が足りていません。試験に出る単語の8割を理解することが、最初の目標です。
英単語を覚えるということから逃げずに、頑張ってみましょう。
英語は理科や社会を超える暗記教科なので、やればやったぶんだけ点数にも反映されますよ。
セクション2: スラッシュリーディングで深い理解を
英単語がある程度身についたら、スラッシュリーディングの技術を使って、文章を理解しましょう。スラッシュリーディングは文章を適切な単位で区切り、理解を深める技術です。
スラッシュリーディングの例:
例文: “The cat stood up and looked at the bird.”
スラッシュリーディング適用後: “The cat stood up / and looked at the bird.”
このような短い文でも、スラッシュリーディングを適用することで、文の構造がはっきりし、理解が深まります。
より長い文章なら、スラッシュリーディングの効果を強く実感することができます。

セクション3: 試験時間に負けない読解術
最終的には英語の長文問題は、試験時間が大きな壁になります。実際の試験をイメージして、「どれくらいの時間で長文問題を解けばよいのか？」を考えてみましょう。
ぜんぜん時間が足りないなと思うかもしれませんが、それは誰でも感じることです。
でも試験時間を伸ばすことは無理なので、自分たちが変わるしかありません。
普段から時間を気にして長文問題を読むことで、読解のスピードは速くなっていきます。
長文問題を解くときには、必ずタイマーをセットしましょう。
結論
英語の長文を読めるということは、入学試験だけではなく、大人になってからも役立ちます。
英語はステップバイステップに学習していかないと、なかなか習得することができませんが、1つ1つやることをやっていけば、必ず習得できる教科です。
